Racing

Oulton Park Apr 2006

Another horrible rainy race day! Conditions were extraordinarily bad with marble sized hail stones falling and near freezing temperatures. We ran both the CSL-GT and the F40 at this event, with Tony Rodriguez pairing with Jeff Wyatt in the CSL, and our own Anthony Mott pairing with Jacobo Sebastiani in the F40. The CSL qualified 5th overall with a lap time of 1:50.614 in dry conditions. The F40 suffered a broken gearbox linkage and qualified 15th at the back of the grid. First lap of the race saw a sudden downpour. We had hedged our bets on the CSL and it was running on intermediate tyres, which had absolutely no grip at all in the pouring rain. Jeff had to pit on his very first lap to switch to wet tyres, losing many places in the process. Luckily the F40 was already on wet tyres! Jeff battled away in the CSL while Jacobo battled in the F40, both cars making up places. Jeff finally became stuck in a tussle with a Topcats Marcos, which resulted in a coming together of the two cars. The damage was mostly superficial, but as it was near the half-way mark, it made sense to pit, repair and drop Tony in the car. As Tony sat in the car waiting to go out, you could see the blood drain from his face as the heavens opened up to a torrent of hailstones. When he finally did get out onto the circuit, there was absolutely no grip whatsoever! It was a struggle not to spin the car in a straight line. At every corner he was greeted by spinning cars, cars wedged into barriers and much more. Conditions were so bad that Tony decided to pit as he could not see anything, and had saved the car from at least 10 tank-slappers on the last lap! Co-incidentally, this was EXACTLY the same moment that the race was red-flagged as conditions were too dangerous. A brilliant move by Tony, or just lucky?!?! Anthony Mott had not even got into the F40 yet, and Tony enjoyed just 4 horribly dangerous laps. The end result was a 2nd place overall for the F40 and 9th place overall for the CSL. The F40 was 1st in class and the CSL 3rd in class. Despite all the weather issues we managed to return to the workshop with 2 trophies!!
