Spa May 2006
What a fantastic circuit Spa Francorchamps is. A favourite with most drivers and a track very suited to the CSL. Tony Rodriguez was joined again by Jeff Wyatt and our own Anthony Mott for the 4 hour race at Spa. Testing had gone well, and we were pretty confident. Although the weather had been very wet and near freezing during the week, a sudden turn around before the race saw sunny temperatures over 70 degrees Farenheit! Qualification went well with the car being placed 5th overall just behind the GTS Motorsport M3. Anthony started and throughout the first 2 hours we ran in the top 4, occasionally leading the race, with an overall fastest lap time of 2m37. It was the first time Anthony had race the car and was finding more and more speed with each lap. At the two hour mark, he handed over to Jeff to carry the baton. About 50 minutes later, the car ground to a halt half way round the circuit. On the radio, Jeff thought it was fuel, but we had been very careful in our calculations and there should have been lots of fuel. To our horror, the car was not recovered which was very bizarre and to this day there has been no explanation why no cars where recovered, as they normally are in Britcar races. After the race was over, we discovered that there was indeed no fuel. The reason for this was due to a general compression failure in the engine resulting in high petrol consumption. The engine was low on compression on 4 out of 6 cylinders! We initially put this down to age, as the engine had done ALOT of running - infact, it appeared on disassembly to be simply a failed head gasket! Amazing these BMW engines! Anthony reported that the car seemed to lose power after the first two laps. We were impressed with the 2m37, so will have to wait and see what it will do with all cylinders firing properly! A great performance by the car that bodes well for our next outing at Spa.
