After a long build and test time, the CSL racecar was back! We started with a new shell that had been completely taken to a bare shell and now has a body that is almost entirely carbon fibre, with flat floors, a large rear diffuser and possibly the biggest front splitter and rear wing we have seen! The full spec is detailed in the Projects section of this website. The race itself was a double header with races on both Saturday and Sunday. We really had limited running in the car making this quite a high risk debut! The weather was extremely hot with temperatures inside the car in excess of 40 degrees Celsius! Ed Moore teamed up with Tony Rodriguez again. We qualified the car 11th in a very competitive grid with a time of 1:36.330. We only had 4 laps in qualifying as we hit some technical problems and felt there was more to come. The first race was 100 minutes long and we hit a major problem with the rear differential overheating in the extreme conditions. We had to retire which meant we started 2nd from the back of the grid for the second race. Ed started and within 18 laps had pulled the car right up to the front of the grid! The car performed amazingly, and at the midpoint of the race, Tony prepared to swap places with Ed. He was understandably nervous having to get in a car that was now on pole! However, our luck took a turn for the worse. The rear differential that had previously overheated had cause damage to the prop shaft, causing an oil leak onto the hot exhausts. Ed brought the car in with the rear in flames. No real damage except to our pride. We were not classified for the race, but did see a best lap of 1:34.912 which was fastest in class! That was some consolation, but it is back to the drawing board to sort out the differential heating problem.
